EARS AND WORK
I saw a three-year-old little boy in our child
care center’s Telehealth office because his mom urgently wanted
him to see someone who could specify if he had an ear infection. This
child had been experiencing a lot of pain in the ear and his mom was
unable to schedule a doctor’s appointment due to her work schedule.
I gathered information about the boy, input his demographics and symptoms
into our computer record, and captured a few images of his eardrums.
Mom managed to get a little time off to come in with the child and we
finished the visit together. This child had severe ear infections from
birth and experienced bleeding at one time from the ear. For about an
hour we struggled with the colace to loosen up the wax/blood build up
in the ear. After we proceeded to complete an ear flush with warm water,
I was able to go back in the ear and get better images. Then our Health-e-Access
telehealth Nurse Practitioner made a diagnosis of an ear infection,
and we treated the child promptly. Mom was completely satisfied. She
was able to get the prescription, drop her son off at the babysitter’s
who watched him after preschool, and go back to work.
